Job description

OVIS is seeking journalists for its pilot launch in Hayward, CA.  You need not live in Hayward, CA or the surrounding area to be seriously considered.  However, local journalists are preferred. Your work will help inform and engage our audience and contribute to the overall integrity and credibility of our weekly publication.


Overview

OVIS is the Future of News. It’s the world’s first decentralized media network with a singular focus: Ending fake news by incentivizing the Truth.


Desired Qualities:

  • Experience: 2 years or more in print or broadcast media

  • Integrity: Proven track record free of scandal

  • Leadership: Recognized names in the industry, leaders in newsrooms, academia, and journalism organizations

  • Vision: Entrepreneurs and Newsroom Experimenters

  • Diversity: Wide range of people across all Fault Lines – race, ethnicity, geography, gender, sexual orientation, age, political and religious views.


Compensation:

  • Commitment: one story per week for 15 weeks, 500 words or less

  • Area of focus: Journalism and Hayward, CA. (OVIS will expand to additional markets in the future.)  You do not need to live in Hayward, CA  to participate, although local residents are preferred.

  • Compensation via stipend:

  • Journalists: $100 per 500 words (rounded to the nearest 500)

Key Responsibilities:

1. News Gathering: Conduct thorough research, gather information, and stay up-to-date with current events, both locally and globally. Utilize various sources, including interviews, press releases, online platforms, and official documents, to obtain accurate and reliable information.

2. Reporting: Produce high-quality written articles, reports, features, and news stories in a timely manner. Craft engaging and informative content that adheres to journalistic standards, while catering to our target audience. Present complex information in a clear and concise manner, ensuring accuracy, objectivity, and fairness.

4. Fact-Checking: Verify the accuracy and credibility of information and sources before publishing. Ensure all statements, claims, and statistics are properly attributed and supported by reliable evidence. Maintain a commitment to truth and integrity in reporting.

5. Multichannel Content Creation: Adapt to various media platforms, including print, digital, video, and social media, to reach a diverse audience. Create engaging multimedia content that combines text, images, videos, and infographics to enhance storytelling and maximize impact.

6. Interviewing: Conduct interviews with relevant individuals, experts, and stakeholders to gather insights, opinions, and firsthand accounts. Develop strong communication and interpersonal skills to extract meaningful information and quotes while maintaining professionalism and ethical standards.

7. Collaboration: Work collaboratively with editors, photographers, videographers, and other journalists to develop comprehensive and cohesive news coverage. Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and editorial discussions to contribute ideas and maintain a cohesive editorial vision.

8. Adaptability and Deadlines: Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work under pressure, adapting to changing priorities and tight deadlines. Balance multiple assignments and projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of content.


Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

  2. Proven experience as a journalist, with a strong portfolio of published articles or news stories.

  3. Excellent writing and storytelling skills, with a keen eye for detail and grammar.

  4. Solid understanding of journalistic ethics, principles, and standards.

  5. Proficiency in conducting research and fact-checking.

  6. Strong interview and communication skills.

  7. Familiarity with multimedia content creation and digital publishing platforms.

  8. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  9. Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, when necessary.

  10. Knowledge of current events, politics, and social issues.

  11. Familiarity with AP Style or other style guides is preferred.

  12. Experience with video production and editing tools is a plus.
